The main entrance to the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MarylandWelcome to the National Library of Medicine’s Healing Totem Journey blog! Over the next few months, this blog will chronicle the creation and journey of a healing totem pole commissioned for installation at the Library. We will also give you behind-the-scenes glimpses into the entire process, and NLM outreach efforts along the way. The installation will be done in conjunction with Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness, an exhibition opening at NLM in October 2011. The Library has commissioned Master Carver Jewell Praying Wolf James, a member of the House of Tears Carvers of the Lummi Indian Nation located in Bellingham, Washington, to create the healing totem. Stay tuned to learn more about healing totems, the artist and his work, the totem’s 5,000-mile journey from Bellingham, Washington to Bethesda, Maryland. We look forward to your comments and questions, too.

    • Hi, Sorry to be tardy with a reply. With luck we’re kicking off around June 20th. The big action will be in September when the totem begins its cross country trip. But there’ll be lots to find out as we gear up for the trip. Thanks for reading!
